We round up five impactful non-profits who need your donations this holiday season!

Want to do something worthwhile this holiday season? The RESET team has rounded up five projects that are doing crucial work in the sustainable digitalisation space. Check out our team members’ nominations for organisations in need of your help to keep making a valuable impact in 2025.

Create a stronger Fediverse with Mastodon

Benjamin Lucks’ nomination for donations is Mastodon:

“Musk’s takeover of Twitter has shown us how dangerous it is when individuals control media outlets. I’d therefore like to suggest donating to the decentralised social media platform Mastodon. Decentralised networks such as Mastodon are becoming increasingly important as an alternative to platforms like X, as they are not operated by a single company. This enables equal and democratic mass communication and provides greater protection against misuse.”

Foster a fair digital society with the Free Software Foundation

Indra Jungblut’s nomination for donations is the Free Software Foundation:

“I believe that technological freedom is more important than ever for a fair digital society. Free software gives everyone the right to use, understand, distribute and improve programmes for any purpose. This allows software to be customised to the needs of its users, instead of prioritising the interests of advertisers. By promoting diversity, free software is also a strong counterpoint to the monopolisation by Big Tech. And free software licences prevent lock-in effects because they make users more independent from individual providers.

The Free Software Foundation works tirelessly for the introduction and distribution of free software and is therefore my donation recommendation for 2024!”

Connect communities and combat crisis with Ushahidi

Lana O’Sullivan’s nomination for donations is Ushahidi:

“Working for RESET has shown me how critical access to timely, reliable information is for addressing global challenges like natural disasters, electoral violence and human rights abuses. Yet, in many parts of the world, marginalised communities are often excluded from decision-making processes and lack ways to make their voices heard. Ushahidi is doing important work to bridge this gap by offering an open-source solution that allows communities to collect, share and map vital information in real time. Their work includes tracking post-disaster recovery efforts and monitoring elections for fraud worldwide, which I believe is currently one of the biggest issues facing our planet.”

Help refugees access vital healthcare with Hera Digital Health

Kezia Rice’s nomination for donations is Hera Digital Health:

“It’s recommended that pregnant women receive eight health checkups before giving birth. But refugees and asylum seekers, for whom healthcare is rarely easily accessible, receive an average of just one health checkup during their pregnancy. Hera Digital Health is a mobile app that connects refugees to existing healthcare services. As well as increasing prenatal care for expectant mothers, Hera also provides vaccinations for refugee children. An organisation that saves lives by offering preventative healthcare thanks to digital technology, they are my nomination for donations for 2024.”

Promote open-source solutions with the Green Web Foundation

Uta Mühleis’ nomination for donations is the Green Web Foundation:

“The use of renewable energies and open-source solutions is of central importance for sustainable digitalisation. The Green Web Foundation is committed to a fossil-free internet by 2030. With its freely usable open-source tools, the non-profit organisation is making an active contribution to improving our digital carbon footprint. You too can promote the transition to an environmentally friendly internet by supporting the Green Web Foundation with your donation.”
