Many villages in Africa are still not connected to the electricity grid. Low-income households as well as public institutions meet their energy needs with health and environmentally-damaging energy sources such as kerosene lamps and diesel generators.
RESET will equip a primary school in Tanzania with an innovative solar power system. Students and teachers get clean energy via a low-maintenance system - for improved teaching and learning conditions.
Switch on the light with solar energy: RESET is looking to bring electricity to a primary school in Maji ya Chai (Arusha Region) in Tanzania - for the sustainable improvement of teaching and learning conditions.
The Kitefu Primary School (Reg.-number: AR/02/2/130) is currently not connected to the power grid and is unlikely to gain access any time soon. The goal of this project is to bring a sustainable, reliable and cost-effective electricity supply to the school via solar power.
With the 200MW solar panel system from the Mobisol and the connection of efficient LED lamps for indoor and outdoor lighting, the entire school will be illuminated, teachers' mobile phones can be charged and devices like radios and laptops can be used. USB Sticks will enable access to the digital world. Via this system, lessons do not need to stop at twilight or during the rainy season while environmentally and health-damaging kerosene lamps are no longer necessary.
Simultaneously, the system will serve as a teaching aid to illustrate ideas around renewable energy, energy efficiency and climate change. The solar system is a model through which the more than one hundred primary school children can understand the use of solar energy.

Impact of the project on the community
Electricity and light facilitate better teaching and learning conditions: even on rainy days, the children from Kitefu Primary School will have enough light to learn while teachers will be able to prepare their lessons for the next day during the evening. The solar panels deliver enough electricity to power laptops so that they can be used to show photos or videos or be used to help build digital literacy skills. Teachers can search the internet for suitable teaching materials such as materials and programs on topics like hands-on learning and preventive healthcare.
The use of solar energy helps to protect the environment as fossil energy sources are replaced. In order to prepare lessons during the evening, teachers have to-date used kerosene lamps which have a number of negative aspects, including: via the CO2 that they emit, fossil fuel sources contribute to climate change, pollute the environment and are also expensive. Furthermore, kerosene lamps represent a fire hazard and are a particular health hazard for children, since the continuous inhalation of harmful smoke causes serious health damage. In contrast, solar lamps or LEDS are easy to use, brighter and more efficient.
Mobile phones are currently charged using car batteries or environmentally-harmful diesel generators while torches and radios are powered by batteries for which there are no recycling possibilities in the region. Solar power enables teachers to charge their devices in an environmentally-friendly way.
In addition to the direct impact on the environment, the installation and operation of the system – an important event for the school and the entire neighbourhood – will contribute to the education of students, teachers and parents on the subject of climate change, environmental protection and renewable energies.
The solar panels
We choose solar panels from Mobisol because they are designed to be easy to use and work as a 'plug and play' system. The panels are installed and maintained by qualified and certified technicians so that no hazards occur due to improper installation. Teachers are given an introduction by the technicians on how to use the panels. The maintenance of the system in the first three years is guaranteed and potential issues are resolved within 48 hours by qualified service personnel.
Mobisol is based in Berlin. Since it's launch, it has installed over 1,000 packages in Tanzania and Kenya over the course of two pilot phases.
