India’s School Lunch Programme: going a long way in improving child nutrition

India’s School Lunch Programme (SLP) is the largest such project in the world with 140 million children being fed in government affiliated institutions every day. The programme was started up as a flawed government initiative during the 1960’s but was often unsuccesful in targeting malnourished children in the poorest segments of society.

Since the early 2000’s, however, religious groups as well as some of India’s top engineers have teamed up with the government and have managed to develop successful programmes with serious societal impact.

The programme is of paramount importance in India, where many children (in some schools sometimes as few as half of the children) have access to a decent meal at least once a day. According to the Christian Science Monitor , the programme is strongly linked to positive improvements in school attendance (in some areas by as much as 15%) thus directly impacting literacy rates too.
