Since the early 2000’s, however, religious groups as well as some of India’s top engineers have teamed up with the government and have managed to develop successful programmes with serious societal impact.
The programme is of paramount importance in India, where many children (in some schools sometimes as few as half of the children) have access to a decent meal at least once a day. According to the Christian Science Monitor , the programme is strongly linked to positive improvements in school attendance (in some areas by as much as 15%) thus directly impacting literacy rates too.
