Ever wondered what the ocean would sound like if it spoke? Hollywood stars such as Julia Roberts and Harrison Ford have lent their voices to the project Nature is Speaking, which has released a series of stirring videos about how dependent on nature we are.

‘Nature doesn’t need People, but People need Nature’ is the message the Nature is Speaking initiative delivers – and they’re right. The project has released a series of videos featuring voiceovers from actors like Julia Roberts, Harrison Ford, Kevin Spacey, Edward Norton and Penélope Cruz each star taking on the role of one element of nature (Roberts is mother earth, Ford is the ocean and on it goes). Organised by Convention International, the films look to lay bare the fact that humans are highly dependent on planet earth and outline that this relationship does not go both ways.

‘Are you paying attention? I’m turning to dust. So maybe you can treat me with a little more respect. I suppose you still wanna eat, right?’ – By the Soil.

Some critics may argue ‘so what? What will all these videos change about our climate threats if our governments ain’t doing anything?’, or some say ‘the truth is behind the scenes they don’t give a damn. They fly private jet from A-B as it’s easier for them.’ (As quoted from one of the online comments). Well, instead of staying behind the scene when talking about environmental issues and blaming the government or whoever when extreme climate events or natural disasters knock on our doors, like many of us do, these Hollywood stars are ACTORS who at least made a good attempt to bring out the message of ‘ Your (our) future depends on me (the Nature), and your (our) actions will determine your (our) fate’, said by Julia Roberts in the short film as she represents the Mother Earth.

I suggest you to spare 10 minutes to watch five short videos instead of flipping through Facebook newsfeed or dozen of WhatsApp text messages. Before that I’d like to remind you: these videos are quite provoking and you may feel embarrassing or impotent of being a human being, if you don’t care about our mother earth: the soil, the water, the rainforest and the ocean. Stop taking a second-thought, just watch them!

Do you think short films like these are good channel to raise people’s environmental awareness? Leave your comments.
