Proposals are currently being accepted until March 1 for the Right Livelihood Award (aka The Alternative Nobel Prize).

The award recognises those who work tirelessly to make the world a better place. People can nominate anyone or any organisation whose work they deem worthy of the award which is bestowed upon the winner at the Swedish Parliament in Stockholm every year.

The award began life in 1980. Journalist and professional philatelist Jakob von Uexkull felt that the Nobel Prize categories were too narrow in scope and too concentrated on the interests of the industrialised countries to be an adequate answer to the challenges facing humanity. The Right Livelihood Award was established to honour and support those “offering practical and exemplary answers to the most urgent challenges facing us today”

It has become widely known as the ‘Alternative Nobel Prize’ and there are now 149 laureates from 62 countries (including Helena Norberg-Hodge who operates the Ladakh Ecological Development Group). The award does not have categories, leaving the spectrum wide open to recognise and award people and organisations doing exceptional work.

The team behind the award receive average of about 70-100 proposals every year. The Right Livelihood Award’s foundation undertakes careful research on all proposals and submits status reports to an international jury which then meets meets at the end of September to select the recipients. Winners are then announced 10 days later.
