Working to build a socially sustainable society, Selco Foundation looks to help rural communities by providing opportunities for asset building and wealth creation under various schemes.
Selco Foundation, a non-profit organisation, has been pushing for the use of renewable energy in India to help protect environment and further rural development. They have been reaching out to underserved or even the unserved areas and people of India with their affordable financial models and clean energy technology to help tackle the energy gap and bring a reliable source of electricity to these communities.
Selco India and its parent company Solar Electric Light Company, India, have installed solar lights in a total of 115,000 households via a service that offers customisation depending on the customer's type of work and their personal preference. They cater to clients ranging from hawkers to rose pickers, day labourers to the special needs of silk farmers under manageable microfinance programmes and have been able to practically provide affordable energy solutions to the underprivileged.
In March 2014, Selco Foundation was awarded a 200,000 USD grant by USAID to help establish six innovation labs to help develop and test sustainable energy solutions. Its Community Labs design solutions take into consideration the needs of various disadvantaged groups and individuals in remote tribal communities and through its Focus labs, it provides them with education, livelihood and other additional essentials.
