Arctic ice disappearing! Thought about the consequences?
CSR monitor in its article, “With Arctic sea ice vulnerable, summer melt season begins briskly” states that resilient multiyear ice floes, which once made up about 60 percent of the Arctic Ocean's summertime ice cover, have dwindled to 30 percent.
The Guardian in their titled "Arctic ice to reach record low within days" talks about the consequences of losing the Arctic's ice coverage, explaining that if the white sea ice no longer reflects sunlight back into space, the region could absorb that heat and temperatures could rise in the area, the impact of which is still unknown. These changes are already evident in Greenland where the coastline is changing and the permafrost is melting.
Mr. Jake Schmidt from Switchboard states that global warming is already causing loss of life and damage to the economy around the world where climate change has already contributed to 400,000 deaths per year and over $699 billion, 0.9 percent annually, in loss to gross domestic product (GDP).
It is very clear that the warnings cannot be ignored. We need timely actions, our governments to acts and we need to have a common generalised action plan and finalise a global agreement. We need to keep our politicians focused and prepare them for the Paris Summit on Climate in 2015, with many major countries staging elections in the coming year, we all in our own countries can vote for the leaders who are willing to take action on climate issues.
Avaaz.org has also initiated a 24 month action plan to achieve a global agreement on climate action by the end of the Paris summit 2015. Have a look at their petition and pledge your support before we cross the tipping point. This Christmas let’s all get together to achieve a sustainable environment for our future generations and save penguins and polar bears from extinction.
