The deadline to lend your support to the initiative calling for basic income to be declared a human right is approaching next week.
The European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) for an Unconditional Basic Outcome is petitioning the European Union to instate basic income as an EU-wide human right. Under the Treaty of Lisbon, any petition that receives one million signatures from EU member states can then be submitted to the European Commission for further examination and eventually come under a hearing in the European Parliament.
According the ECI's website, the main objective behind the initiative is to offer each person in the European Union "the unconditional right as an individual, to have his/her material needs met to ensure a life of dignity and to empower participation in society".
The petitioners believe that an Unconditional Basic Income (UBI) will help build a more effcient and emancipatory welfare system while simultaneously supporting equality and economic participation and would look to transform the current European Basic Income scheme. More details about the objective and procedure can be found on the website and are also detailed in the video below:
What do you think? Have you voted? Time is running out, there are just eight days left. If you are a citizen of one of the EU states and are over 18 years old, you are eligible and can sign the petition here.
