Ever wondered what it would feel like to ride an electric wooden bike? No? Maybe it’s time to start, because thanks to a Dutch bicycle company, they’re shock absorbent, sustainable and will take you on one smooth ride.
Bough Bikes, manufacturers of the world’s first electric wooden bike, premièred their hand-crafted, pedal powered machines at last month’s NYCxDESIGN 2014 event. The bikes are made of sustainable oak and supply pedal-assist power. This means the rider can go as fast as 15mph on flat ground, and control the wind whipping through their hair with a speed regulator.
The next generation of this bike is already under way and set to tickle your sustainable bones more than the first design. While this charges in 3 – 6 hours, the second generation will have the capability of recharging itself while riding from the hubs. That’s far better than a car and will get you from A to B in less time than it takes you to say win-win.
NYCxDesign is New York City’s official celebration of design, promoting emerging and established design practices. This wooden treat was but one of many innovative ideas on show over its 12 day duration period.
